The Odyssey of a Malcontent

“Watch this then!” as I line up my shot with the welding rod type hook.
I let it fly; the wired hook went like a rocket across the grassy playing area, heading in the direction of the sparrow. About halfway towards its intended target, the thing hits the ground alerting the sparrow, which starts to fly off. Then the projectile bounces off the ground and straight up to where the sparrow was flying, thud! Chirp! Thud!
“Bloody hell, I got it!”

     As I run over to have a look I am followed by one of the girls,
Sure enough there it is with the bloody thing sticking straight through it, dead as a doornail
 
“He’s killed the poor little thing!” the girl shrieks.
“You horrible person how could you!” as they all start to cry.
“I didn’t mean it honest! It was miles away; I never thought I would hit it really!”
“Please don’t tell the teacher?” I pleaded.
It was too late though, I was condemned, forever to be known, as the sparrow killer, by all the girls of Lanark grammar.

     I felt rotten for about 5 minutes, although there was one good outcome, the lads thought I had done something heroic and was the topic of conversation at playtime, when we gave it a proper burial. I had made a name for myself! I was infamous already and the talk of the school."
