Week 10
The Day’s of Noah and Lot
This section is about what the days of Noah and Lot were like compared to today
And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually”
Genesis 6:5
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”
2 Peter 3:3-4
In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up
to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
Jude 7
(1) Jesus indicates that the world which exists before His return will be given over to pleasure-seeking, degenerate, immorality, corrupt, perverse, idleness and a rejection of the things of God. All godly standards that made many nations great will be forgotten in favor of licentiousness. Jesus informs us that before He returns, certain conditions will exist in society in general. These conditions are a sign to believers that His coming is near. There has always been corruption in society, but the idea here is of such decadence and depravity that has gone too far.
The Lord makes use of two Old Testament characters to illustrate the characteristics and conditions that will exist at all levels of humanity prior to His coming. The conditions that existed in Lot’s day will also go with that of Noah’s day. Life will go on as normal until the Lord comes again. But such normality will become increasingly depraved to the point that people only think about pleasure. Hedonism, eating, drinking, parties. They will plan ahead. Marrying and giving in marriage. Those who live for themselves with no thought for God will reject any idea that judgment is on its way. The same conditions existing in Sodom are plain to see in our time and suggest that this world is ripe for judgment. Peter tells us that it will be like that in the Last Days also.
(2) Jesus said about the last days of His return by looking at the days of Noah and the days of Lot. They stand out in the Bible as probably being the two most extreme judgments by God in the entire Old Testament. Look at what is written in the book of Genesis and at the New Testament when speaking of the days of Noah and Lot.
The Lord Himself came down to visit Abraham and to see if the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is as bad as it really was. God did this so that His servant Abraham would understand the need for the coming judgment. And it would give Abraham the chance to see the justice of God in sparing those who were innocent.
With Jesus contrasting His return to the days of Lot, it shouldn’t be surprising that sexual immorality in the form of homosexuality is increasing in our day. That some so called Christian ministers just see it as an ‘alternative lifestyle’ should surprise and shock us.
Jesus wanted to portray in using the examples of both Lot and Noah. And that is the importance of simply being ‘ready’. Don’t fall asleep in your faith. Watch and be aware of the time in which you live! Look for the signs of the Lord’s near return and realize that it could be this very day. There are no prophecies that have to be fulfilled before the bridegroom can return to take His bride back to the home he has prepared for her. The main point that Jesus is making is that life in the times of Noah and Lot was going on as normal. They were eating, drinking, getting married. It was business as normal. They had no idea that judgment was right at the door. And yet, like a thief in the night, it came. Jesus’ return for His bride is going to occur just as quickly and suddenly.
It is important to be moral people in an immoral world, we are to be the light and salt of the world.
