Roughly six months after purchasing the company (based on a sizeable personal loan at 1 percent over prime), it was a substantial shock when the prime rate rose to 22 percent - and we were then required to pay 23 percent interest on the bank loan. This was crisis management in the true sense of the phrase. Coping with this threat required innovation, creativity, patience, and confidence. There are several ways of dealing with crisis situations. Some crises are relatively minor, but are viewed as crises because everything had been going smoothly and even a small bump in the process creates a certain amount of anxiety. A minor crisis could be the loss of a key department manager with no immediate replacement in sight. it could also be an unexpected drop in sales that is worse than anticipated. The crisis faced by my newly acquired company at this time was a major crisis - the potential loss of the company due to national economic conditions over which we had no control.
