Even with her medical history, Dysplasia thought that she could run fast. However, Mano’s legs were as strong as tree limbs, allowing him to easily stay ahead of her.
“I think the old woman could out run you!” He shouted from up ahead. Dysplasia took a deep breath and ran as fast as she could. She knew the burst of energy wouldn’t last long enough to stay with him, but at least she could scare him a little. However, Mano didn’t seem to notice. He stopped abruptly on a hill, allowing her to catch up to him. “Getting tired?” She challenged. “There’ssomeonehere.” He muttered quickly, watching the next hill. “What?” Dysplasia panted. His body tensed. “There’s someone here, on the path ahead.” “So? We’re gypsies, remember?” She reminded him. But then she heard it, the sound of clinking armor. It could only be the scouts. “Mano! Hide in the woods, I…” She tried to explain, but before she could finish the troops had reached the top of the hill and were in full sight of her companion. “Great Healer!” yelled a familiar voice. She recognized the man she had saved from the forest cat. He smiled proudly toward his friends. “See? I told you she existed!” “Then that’s the Maneater!” One of his companions yelled. “Cut that fugitive down, he’s worth one thousand gold pieces!” Three of the men ran toward them with their swords drawn, but by the time they got there they were dead. Before Dysplasia could process the motion, Mano was withdrawing his blade from the body of the second man. “Fugitive?” Mano shrieked. “What’s my crime?” Another soldier gaped in horror at the bloodied sword hand. “It’s true, it’s all true! It’s the Maneater, he’ll chew our bones!” He shrieked. “Healer!” The first man called to her. “Slay him while you have the chance, he’ll kill us all!” “At least you’ve got one thing right!” Mano yelled back as three more men locked him into combat. The last two scouts ran for Dysplasia and attempted to drag her away f

About the Book

About the Author
Growing up, Stephanie Witmer never wanted to be a novelist. Many times she was encouraged to keep a diary or journal, but she declined, stating that she was "more of a reader than a writer." However, as she entered middle school, she ran out of books to read, stating that "All the teen girl books were the same. You had the queen bee battles, or a sappy highschool romance story." Because of this, she begain to write her own stories. "I just needed something to do!" She states. "I flew through my schoolwork and had chronic boredom! I wasn't a big fan of television, I'm still not, and there's nothing to do around my small town, so I created stories as a way of trying on other lives." Even now, she says that almost every main character of a story she writes, with the exception of a series of stories starring her younger brother, are teen girls about her age with some of her own favorite personality traits and her own physical traits. The Outcasts was her third major story. "Once I saw where it was going and how it could be used to help other teens, I kept writing and asked God to bless it and keep it going if He wanted it in print." She says. "Obviously, I guess He did!" When asked about the future of the novel, she simply shrugs. "All in all, I hope it keeps going and reaches the teens that need it, or anyone else who needs a reminder."
