In this book, I write about everyday experiences. Whether loss, insecurity, fear, depression, loneliness, or frustration over mistakes made, it’s likely that you, a colleague at work, a neighbor, or someone you’ve passed in the corridors of life, is hurting right now. Let’s face it, life happens. It happens with its plethora of joys and accomplishments, but it also comes with its share of disappointments, setbacks and tragedies. I call these experiences our unsuspecting realities. They are reminders to some of us, and revelations to others, that obstacles are a natural part of the journey to success and fulfillment. We should learn to embrace them!
Life doesn’t make appointments with us, nor does it seek permission to throw us a curve ball at 98 miles per hour. Life doesn’t care if you’re a chief executive officer, the president or prime minister of a great nation, a struggling college student, a stay-at-home mom, a clergyman, a business owner, or a janitor. It creates situations that force all of us to reevaluate our life choices and perspectives. Often though, if allowed, this propels us toward our life’s purpose.
My goal in this book is two-fold. First, it’s my desire to convince you that you are extremely valuable and your life is still very useful. And that you are okay, though you may not be feeling okay about your life as it is right now. I’m aware, that when you’re in the midst of experiencing any loss or disappointment that life throws your way, it’s very easy to want to give up. However, painful transitions are an inevitable part of the life experience. Despite them, you can still come out experiencing peace, recovery and success in the end. And if you think you’ve reached your plateau in life, think again.
Secondly, I believe that life and loss give us a window of time to heal, and then inevitably, doors of opportunities are opened for us, allowing us to make great contributions to the world. I also believe that people who are hurting best serve themselves by helping other hurting people. This ultimately moves them toward their best healing. It is my hope that you will seize this chance to impact the world positively, using the most challenging parts of your journey to lay the foundation for your best contributions.
I titled this book “Between” because in life we are guaranteed to experience interludes, whether spiritual, physical, emotional, financial, or professional. I can’t help but think that so many people are bewildered and heavy laden because, in general, they’re not equipped to handle those between phases of their lives. Perhaps they fail to see their specific interludes as divinely inspired and appointed moments hiding behind difficult situations.
We need to move through life with purposeful caution as we ponder our next move following loss or setbacks. Whenever we’re pressed between life’s challenges, we have the freedom to make either positive or negative choices. Therefore, how we choose to handle our transitions is crucial to our well-being and to the healing process.
It is my prayer that some of the lessons I’ve learned will be of inspiration to you. I write about everyday situations, the kind of things most of us can relate to. My hope is that you’ll find your story embedded in mine.
