“Khan’s resort is impressive,” Relingston said, while gesturing in the same direction. “You’re going to be treated like royalty, maybe more so than some of the other guests.”
This was not what Crenshaw wanted to hear. He was curious enough as to why Khan was hosting this event. His VIP invitation in itself was not that unusual given his position at the Station, but the way Relingston looked at him when saying this made him feel uneasy.
“Khan wants to go into deep Space, and he needs us to get him there.” Relingston did not take any time at all to drop the bomb.
The idea of a deep space initiative had been tossed around for years. While the WEC had the technology to do it, there never seemed to be a strong enough reason to make the investment. If Khan wanted to invest his own resources in this, there must be a strong economic incentive for him, something that no one else had uncovered.
Crenshaw took a long look at Relingston before breaking the silence. “Why? What has he found? What does he expect us to do for him?”
Crenshaw had not known if Relingston knew about Accipiter’s Black Program. A program kept very secret even from those on the station. If Khan wanted to go into deep space, he must have gained access to some very confidential information.
Relingston held his hand up low on the table. Crenshaw knew he needed to keep this conversation as meaningless as possible to all the ears around him. For the first time, he was glad to have met someone from the agency prior to attending the conference.
“Khan is going to ask ISEC to participate in a deep space mission that would last seven years. He will fund half of this and is looking for support for the remainder. The mission will include at least five of his own scientists. The key to his success is to get the help of the WEC to design a propulsion system that can be fueled enroute.”
“He knows,” Crenshaw thought.
