About the Book

A scene appears in front of the camera.  Captured on a tiny compact flash card, it comes to life on the computer screen -- with flaws, improper lighting and foreign objects.  These elements and overall composition are addressed by the artist.  An original picture may be changed by photographic editing software until a more perfect image is created.  Thus the "bright side" is first seen by the photographer, established by the lens and sent through the digital darkroom back into light, where the artist chooses which elements to keep or change.  The completed version then appears upon the printed page.

About the Author

IMAGES FROM THE BRIGHT SIDE reflects a time of learning how to manipulate and print photographs to their best advantage.  Katharine Villard earned a doctoral degree in history from the University of Arkansas, and informally learned the fun of creating art in mixed media and collage. When digital cameras came on the market she expanded her work in photography, using a Canon 40D and Canon XSi.  For several years she was a member of the Artistic Roots Cooperative Gallery in Campton, New Hampshire.  In 2007 she won first prize in the annual travel photo contest sponsored by Abercrombie & Kent.  She has traveled to New Zealand, Iceland, Turkey, Madagascar and Tanzania.  She is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA).  Villard lives in Cedar City, Utah.
