Stepping into the room, Arlend flinched as a cup flew by, barely grazing the tip of his nose before shattering against the wall. "It was for his good!" bellowed Arlend's father. "His good! To kill him, let's see how much good that will do him!" his mother retorted. "I wasn't aiming for him, dagnabit! And anyway, he's not dead!" "How would you know?! Not that you would go check on him, no –" "You think he would want to see me, of all people!" "Well, you could at least – " And then she saw Arlend. She shrieked, running over and nearly suffocating him. "You're alive!" "Good to see you too, Mother," he replied as best he could, barely able to breathe. "Arlend! Oh, my baby! Are you okay?" "Yes, Mother, I'm feeling fine now." She motioned for her son to sit down. "So, let's try to sort some things out," she said. "Now that you're not throwing things at me anymore," her husband muttered under his breath. She pretended not to hear, continuing, "What's happening around here?" "Nothing," hammered the duque. "Nothing! But what about the girl?" "Who cares? She was just a girl," came the duque. "Just. A. Girl!" Arlend repeated sternly. "How could you say that? She wasn't just any girl, she was mine! I loved her like I would love my own daughter. You might not care, but I was the one who put in hour after hour, year after year on this. I gave to her out of my own life. She meant more than the world to me, Father!" "Arlend! That's enough!" But Arland was already out of the room. He stormed up the stairs like there was no tomorrow and crashed into his room. Opening the balcony door, he stepped out and climbed onto the railing. He peered to the left, and then to the right. And most importantly, straight down. No one was on the sandy lot behind the palace, five levels below. Arland jumped.
