The three children turned as one as their sight recovered, and stared up at the roof of the house.
Against an angry purple sky they saw a ball of smoke roll away from the roof and bright yellow tongues of flame leap from a huge hole in the gable end of the roof.
“It’s been struck by lightning,” gasped Rebecca. “Look, the roof, it’s on fire!”
As the children gazed upwards, the snaking yellow flames grew taller and clouds of thick grey smoke billowed across the stormy sky. From within the house came the sudden sound of raised voices and a high pitched shriek.
“Uncle Ronald and Aunt Clarissa! They’re still inside," shouted Rebecca
The crackle of burning wood grew louder and sparks flew into the dark sky like orange snowflakes as fire began to take hold. Suddenly the front door flew open with a bang and Uncle Ronald crashed through the doorway closely followed by a hysterical Aunt Clarissa.
“Fire, we’re on fire, we’re burning!” she babbled as they both turned to look up at the blazing roof above them.
“That’s blown it,” said Tom. “If they see us we’re done for, come on, run!”
Kate and Tom turned and seized the wheelchair, pushing it before them as fast as they could. As they reached the gateway into the drive, they heard a familiar sound:
“HAH!! The brats have escaped - look they’ve got Rebecca with them,” shouted Uncle Ronald.
“Quick, stop them!”
“Oooooooh, the fire, the fire!” screamed Aunt Clarissa.

About the Book
Whilst on holiday, Tom and Kate discover “Greyghost”, a mysterious ruined house. On a return visit they encounter a strange ghostly mist which appears to transport them back through time to the period when the house was intact and occupied, where they meet Rebecca, a beautiful young girl who is confined to a wheelchair. In a further visit they do battle with the vile and villainous Uncle Ronald and Aunt Clarissa who are trying to take over Greyghost and send Rebecca away. After a ghostly experience in a cellar the three children make a desperate attempt to escape the clutches of the two villains and following a thrilling climax the mystery of Greyghost’s past is finally revealed.
About the Author
David Welsh is a man who loves books; reading them and writing them. He has a passionate belief that children should be encouraged to read widely from an early age and it is this passion which motivated the writing of his first novel for children: “Greyghost” A retired engineer and manager, he lives in the county of Wiltshire and is married with two grown up children and four grandchildren.
