Kimme Gets a Valentine

It was a warm winter day in Cotton Spring. As Mama Squirrel was dropping Kimme off at school, she said, “Kimme, have a great day, and I’ll talk to you later.”

“Oh, I will because it’s Valentine’s Day,” Kimme said grinning from ear to ear.

Mama Squirrel looked back over her seat and said, “Are you expecting to get a valentine card from someone special today?” Kimme’s face turned as red as an apple. “Mom! Everyone expects to get a valentine from someone special,” she replied fanning her face.

“Okay Kimme, I hope you get a card today, but do not be disappointed if you do not get one.” said Mama Squirrel. “Thanks Mama! I’ll keep that in mind,’ Kimme said jumping out of the car. Kimme’s friends were waiting by the front door to go to class together. “Hi Kimme!” said Tamia. “Hi, Tamia. Are you as excited as I am?” asked Kimme.

Rosa replied first, “Yes! Do you know how many you will get today?”

Lynn shook her head and said, “Not at all.” “I think we’ll do fine. We’d better get to class before we’re all late,” Kimme said pushing the girls toward the room. As they got to the class, the girls noticed a basket filled with cards sitting on the teacher’s desk.  “Look! I told you guys,” Kimme said quietly to the rest of the girls. The bell rang, and Mrs. Carpenter came into room and said, “Okay!  So we do not get distracted by these valentine cards on my desk, I will pass them out five minutes before class ends.” The class was not happy with this decision. The girls looked at each other and knew that their excitement would have to wait until after class. As Mrs. Carpenter taught the lesson, everyone’s minds were on how many of those valentines were for them.  Rosa looked up at the clock and noticed that class was about to end in ten minutes.  “Almost there, Tamia,” Rosa said. Tamia looked up at the clock and then tapped Kimme and Lynn on their shoulders. Kimme and Lynn looked at the clock, and then everyone looked up at the clock.
