In a world where a paper towel is
dispensed before I wash my hands
and the toilet flushes before I sit
and the door slides open as I enter
and the door shuts as I leave
I realize that our lives are automatic
working around the clock on a
battery filled environment-
living through digital numbers on
watch faces
we live in a waterproof society
one that fears to get a little wet on
a sad soppy day
repelling truth and water-
we live in a fool-proofed society
one that has instructions built-in
allowing our mistakes to be
demonstrations of new creations
taking our cars into the future on cruise control
as we sit in the back and enjoy the ride-
we live in a insect repelled society
one that mists away
nuisances and small flies
small peeves
we live in world where the
body must adjust to an alarm clock
time goes by
and we are the happy mechanical souls-
wound up to wind up again and again
as the waterproofed, fool-proofed, insect repelled
individuals eating organic foods not grown on a meat slaughtered trees
and together we live in harmony.

Building of the Ruins is a collection of poetry that has been written over the past five years. The book deals with issues of love, loss, racism, marriage, travel, and more. About the Author
Katherine L. Sheffield was born and raised in sunny California. Growing up, Sheffield became a talented singer who loved art, music, and writing. These passions gave her a positive outlet which contributed to her creative writing. Her inspirations are truly reflected in every word she has written.
Today, Sheffield has fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher. She has graduated from California State University Fullerton with a bachelor's degree in English and the University of Phoenix with a master's degree in Secondary Education.
She is happily married to her husband, Jason, and looks forward to traveling to new places to gain more inspirations for her future writings.
