The command-control leadership style adopted by Dr Glanville showed in his body language. His mind was made up….he was not “up for listening”. Rosie’s Mum looked shell-shocked and empty. Rosie knew again that quickly she had to try to save the day. She quipped that Dr Kemp, her GP could maybe come up with a paediatric preparation/dose. “Oh no!” roared Dr Glanville….”this is the correct dose…..you know I wouldn’t hurt you…this has an excellent proven track record. I have a 60 year-old patient..it’s changed his life…others I could tell you….” “That would be good..!” snapped Rosie, whose anger threatened to show itself at the wrong moment. She felt insulted and betrayed at his preference-shaping agenda, and cheap sales pitch, but clearly he just wanted to get her off his list, tick the right box on the Outpatient Audit form “Treated and Discharged” and dismiss her. His job was done….job and finish…..this was a car mechanic’s approach to health care. Dr Glanville adds; I’m sure Dr Glanville was simply stepping on the accelerator because he could see potential benefits for the patient. I’m sure his only desire was in fact to see a good outcome. The family walked in stunned silence through the long corridor. …numb.. ( Chapter 6 p61)
