About the Book

About the Author

Setaareh Shahbaaz was born into an upper middle class family in Tehran, Iran.  She spent her early childhood under the rule of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.  The Islamic Revolution of 1979, would have devastating consequences in her life.

Fundamental Islam was ushered in by the Ayatollah Khomeini.  Setaareh found herself in an all girl’s school, forced into wearing a hijab, and being marched into the new school mosque to pray everyday at noon.  This was the beginning of her search for truth.

Setaareh was incarcerated at Rajaee Prison in Tehran, Iran for three years.  These years were filled with torture and great suffering.  After her husband, Ali, engineered Setaareh’s escape from prison, they fled through the mountains of Pakistan with their two small boys.  From Pakistan, they were granted asylum in North America.

Today Setaareh still lives in North America with her husband Ali, and their three children.  They take pleasure in long evenings, each other, and fine tea.  The family enjoys outings to the Pacific shore.  The kids have yet to make it to Disney Land, but there is still time!

Their trials did not end in Iran.  To this day, they are sought out by the Iranian government.
