  "Awhile back, Airlift Northwest dragged some guy out of the sticks. It was somewhere over by Cle Elum. He's been out of it for at least half of the time. He was found with seven arrows stuck in him. He also had a rifle round in his back. There were signs of a major struggle all over him. In short, he looked like shit. Anyway, he's come out of it pretty good."

  "Sounds pretty weird, if you ask me," Dixon replied.

  "Me, too. The problem gets worse. You see, when he came out of it and began talking again, he didn't make any sense. The resident shrink over at Harborview says he thinks he's still in the 1800's and fighting Indians."

  "Well goddamn it! Didn't they find him with a bunch of arrows in his back? Hell! I think I'd start believing him!"

  At this they both began to chuckle.

  "Well, if someone has invented a time machine then we can substantiate it. Until then it's just an ordinary attempted homicide."

  "I still don't see where any of this pertains to me," Dixon commented.

  Detective Stallman gave Sergeant Dixon a long knowing look. For over a minute, nothing was said.

  Finally, Dixon asked, "What?"

  "You don't know?"

  "I'm not into guessing games."

  "Okay, he asked for you," Stallman told him.

   "Who asked for me?"

  "Lieutenant John Douglas Junior," Stallman answered.

  "Okay."

  Then when there was no comment, he added, "I don't know any Lieutenant John Douglas. Does he work homicide?"

  "You really don't know."

  "What?" Dixon was raising his voice a little.

  "You see," Stallman explained, "the guy that they hauled out of the woods awhile back? He gave his name as Lieutenant John Douglas Junior. He asked specifically for you."

  Nate Dixon only sat there with his mouth open. His reaction was exactly what Detective Stallman had expected.

  "What's going on here? Where does he know me from?"

  "That's why you're here. We thought you might know."
