Sonnet
The distant sounds of children playing, a passing
train, a barking dog; inside our home
the muffled clatter of supper dishes being
washed; an absent neighbor’s unanswered phone,
a car whines up a hill and flashing fireflies
blend their counterpoint rhythm to the tree
frogs choral fugue. And gently summoned by
the tranquil magic of this night, the memories
of my sweet youth forsake their dusty shelf
to form themselves into the ranks and files
of a small-town parade. Beside myself,
like some excited child, with glee I smile
and follow them until once more I dance
through time into my boyhood town in

About the Book
This book is made up of poems by a classical musician, Thomas Lisenbee; a writer and teacher, Kay Z. Myers; and an art museum director, Bret Waller—three former schoolmates from a small town in southeast Kansas. The trio came together for the first time in decades at a fiftieth anniversary high school reunion and discovered to their mutual surprise that for many years each had been writing poetry.
