The Encounter a true story by the author
At a truck stop coffee counter, very early one morning; I felt a presence enter the room that was quiet, yet haunting. Although deep into my thoughts, it caught my attention. I sensed the power; yet calmness, like a divine intervention. I looked up into the pools of ice blue eyes. He had an aura of gentleness, yet seemed pensive and wise. I saw hunger and need, and hope that had not died… He was tattered, yet clean; and held fast to his pride. A waitress approached, obviously annoyed. His humble quest was quietly employed… " Could you spare a small cup of coffee, or a glass of water?" But her curt reply implied, that his needs didn’t matter. "That’s not this truck stops policy!" she spat, "to feed the needy"… His eyes lowered as he nodded, not wanting to seem greedy. A trucker at a table across from the man, was devouring a smorgasbord of food… He noticed the man, observed his hunger; and didn’t want to be rude. "Give him a cup of my coffee," he said to the waitress loudly. Feeling he had done a generous deed, he continued eating proudly. The man gratefully accepted the coffee, knowing his circumstance; And filled it with lots of sugar and cream. for added sustenance. He had cigarette butts he had found neatly tucked into the pocket of his shirt; And as he cautiously lit one up, you could see his pride was hurt. My soul ached as I felt and sensed, the desperation of this man. I knew his need was sincere, and not a convincing scam, How to help this man was a destiny that was clearly for me to decide … It needed to be a subtle gesture that wouldn’t injure his pride. A ten-dollar bill and a pack of cigarettes was folded in my hand. I went up and paid for my coffee, and slowly walked up behind the man. Gently I laid my hand on his shoulder, and laid down the gift that I could spare, "You look like you need a little help," I quietly said, "I want you to know that I care…" The ice blue eyes looked up, and he smiled at me. "Thank you mam;" he softly said, "for your generosity." He hadn’t even looked at the gift that I had unobtrusively lain down. The little piece of his pride that was lost, had suddenly been found. I went about my morning chores of cleanliness, getting ready for my day; But thoughts of this man still filled my mind in an eerie, haunting way. I wanted to see him one more time, to see what he had done… A little control of his environment was a battle he had won! I watched the man from a distance, and what I could clearly see… Gave me hope and promise that warmed my soul, and a faith in humanity. He ordered a meager breakfast, rationing the gift I gave… Restoring his hope for the future with a promise of a better day. He met the waitress’s icy stare, and showed her that he could pay. "An angel gave me breakfast." He said, "and soon I’ll be on my way." The encounter will always live in my soul, and gives me happiness… I restored the pride of a humble man. and felt I was the one who was blessed! The desperation of his situation never let go of his pride and humility. I received a gift from him that day. for the pride was now within me…!

About the Book
"Moods of Inspiration" by Marilyn J. Boersma is a collection of poetry that comes from the author's heart and expresses the innermost feelings and longings of her soul. The author uses her talents as a poet, composer, writer, and musician to tell the story of her life. As a result, these poems are united in theme as they are an autobiographical examination of the author's life. The collection is divided into seventeen chapters that tell of her childhood, her first two marriages, her life with her soul mate trucking across the country, her love of her country, her spiritualistic attitude, and much more. Each chapter begins with a prosaic introduction and explanation of one aspect of the author's life and then is followed by poems on the aforementioned aspect.
For instance, when writing about the early years of her life, she first explains, "Therefore this next segment of poems is a postlude of analogies concerning life and love"...Her poem "One Legged Bird" has an example of her instinctive nature to express the feelings of love and compassion; along with her love of nature and animals. She writes:
"This gentleness and caring of the one-legged bird,
carried a magnificent strength...
Even though scorned,
he cared for his flock,
and saved them at any length!"
Because of the broad nature of this collection, it has an appeal to many readers including those who like patriotic, holiday-themed, or love poems, but also to anyone who enjoys learning about another persons life experiences and realizations concerning love; through narration, poems and songs.
The author has an innate ability to turn the dark clouds of your subconscious into a brilliant rainbow of happiness and serenity; therefore creating a conscious definition of love that entwines throughout all of her writing...A humbling and thought provoking experience!
About the Author
Marilyn J. Boersma is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan; and currently lives in Crystal River, Florida. She resides there with her soul mate, and husband of 14 years, 2 cats Elvis and Presley; and as an animal lover has adopted many strays, including a pet opossum named Norman.
Moods of Inspiration is her first publication. She exhibited talent in poetry and singing when she was a youth, but spent the bulk of her life raising her six children, five step-children and a boy she took legal guardianship of when he was 12, as his parents were killed; and was absorbed in all the busyness of being a working mother. Her career pendulum swung from Human Resource Development coordinator to cross country trucking; but her love of music and writing always entwined, especially during her trucking years.
She has composed music and lyrics to many songs, and has written approximately 200 poems. Until this publication her talent was unique towards helping family and friends with her written word; always turning life's problems into a rainbow, or defining the feelings that one should embrace by her definition of love with her written word.
