Kahiku talked to Kahala for awhile and explained what happened the night they were separated. Then he told her about their grandfather.
Kahala’s face changed when she heard this. “But, Hiku, why didn’t he come for me?”
He paused when she asked this. He didn’t have the heart to tell her. He finally said, “I don’t know, Kahala.”
“Does he want to see me now?” she asked.
“He doesn’t know I’m here.”
“Then, he still doesn’t want me?”
“I don’t know, Kahala.”
“If he knew me, he would like me, Hiku. I’m no trouble. I have lots of friends here and they like me.”
“Well, the important thing to know is that I like you Kahala, and I would have come sooner if I had known where you were, but I just found out recently.”
“Kahiku, are you going to take me home with you?”
“I don’t think I can, Kahala.” His stomach was tied up in knots again.
“I promise I won’t be any trouble. I hardly eat anything, and I’ll even work around the house. I have all kinds of chores here, and Mrs. Kim says I’m a good worker.”
“No, no. That’s not it, Kahala. That’s not what Grandpa needs.”
“Just tell me, Hiku, and I’ll be whatever he needs.”

About the Book
As a fourteen year old orphan, Kahiku is brought to live in Kahala's pristine shores by his wealthy grandfather. After two years, his little sister Kahala, is finally rescued from an orphanage to join him. This childhood experience fuels their compassion for homeless children and inspires them, over a decade later, to begin a hanai dynasty of their own.

As these hearts of Kahala’s shores,
Who brought in children from the cold
In this story to be told.
Ah, to see a homeless child set free
From his abandoned misery,
And pain that binds his lonely heart,
So that he might become a part
Of generous souls with charity,
Who’d share their love so gracefully.
What if a child, Hawaiian born,
A motherless child without scorn,
Found a place in Kahala sun
Where he could play and have some fun?
How lovely that would be.
