I never had a big dream to become a teacher; to capture young minds and send them out into the world in a blaze of glory. I only knew that I wanted to go to college to learn how to do something. Besides that, those summers off looked pretty good to me as well as a long vacation at Christmas. So teaching it would be.
It didn’t take me very long to realize how important these kids in my classes would become to me. They were on my mind even when school was over. Who knew where my teaching would take them? A word of praise or understanding might make all the difference. Even now, after all these years I recall names and faces of so many.
And especially, I believed that education is learning how to live --- and I still do.
