My Son's Eternal Birth

       When Jeff was born into the world he was a cesarean baby, because he had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck twice. By the grace of God, Jeff was born totally healthy. When Jeff was born he came in screaming! I remember the nurse wrapping him up in a blanket and putting him under a heat lamp with no success of calming him down. After about five minutes of Jeff screaming at the top of his lungs, one of the nurses asked me if I wanted to hold him. Without hesitation, I said, “Yes”. I was amazed at what happened next, Jeff stopped crying. I mean, as soon as Jeff went into my arms, he quit crying! It was awesome! I remember looking at “my son” in awe. It was as though we knew each other even though this was the first time that we physically saw each other. I remember asking the nurse if Jeff could see me because as he stopped crying he was looking directly at me. I had always thought that babies could not see as soon as they were born. One of the nurses told me that babies can actually see up to eighteen inches as soon as they are born.  I knew that Jeff was looking at me and I was so amazed because I felt that he knew me immediately. From that very instant we laid eyes on each other we had a special love and bond. We are forever thankful that God allowed us to be “son and dad”.

       Jeff and I always wanted to be with each other and most of the time, outside of work and school, we were together. I went out of town for work approximately once a year, for two or three consecutive years, and it was tough for both of us. On one occasion that I went out of town, Jeff left fourteen messages on my cell phone in one day and he was in school that day! I remember spending hours on the phone with Jeff that evening. We even did his homework together that night! I was only gone for two nights during that trip and each night was the same thing, we spent hours of quality time on the phone. One night Jeff told me he couldn’t go to sleep without me being at home, so we talked for hours until we were both exhausted. If I remember right, I think we stayed up beyond midnight. What happened on my way home from that same trip is an awesome memory of Jeff’s love for me that I hope I can keep with me throughout eternity. When I started on my way home I called to tell everyone approximately what time I should be getting home. On my way home, Jeff called me a couple of times, and I called home a couple times. I was not going to get home until late that night. When my wife and our three other kids went to sleep, Jeff called me to see how much longer it would be before I got home. He told me that he was getting tired and didn’t know if he could stay up until I got home. I encouraged my son to go to sleep and I told him that I would wake him up when I got home. It was sometime after eleven o’clock when I finally got home. I was blessed with what I found waiting for me. Jeff left a note, that I still have today, it read, “Dad, please put me by you when you get home so I could sleep by you, Love Jeff”. Did I feel good when I read his note! Jeff was sleeping on the couch and after I checked on everybody else, I decided to let him sleep. I lied down on the floor next to him and there I slept. I was blessed with this memory; it is such a clear and special memory. This is an awesome example on how Jeff and I wanted to be with each other. We love each other and we are thankful to God for allowing us to be “son and dad”.
