It was tough growing up with a man who was my mother’s husband and my sister’s father. And why do I describe this man in such a way other than simply calling him my step-father? That is because he was nothing but, viciously violent towards my mother most of the time. So, he doesn’t deserve a title such as “step-father” or even the title of a “man” for that matter.
Hearing the arguments and slaps were common in our home. But, on one evening when I was about 8 years old, things were different. Different from the usual shouting my mother would do towards my step-father which he would follow up with a slap or a closed hand punch in her face. This time I heard a loud thump against their bedroom wall and my mother yelp. Her yelp sounded like the yelp that a puppy makes when he is separated from his mother. So, immediately I no longer felt like this little 8 year old girl but, a mother. A mother that needed to run to save her puppy that was in trouble. Except for in this instance, the puppy was my mother. I felt this inner strength surge within me. Although, I was barely 100 pounds, I didn’t care about what might happen to me. I just cared about saving my mother. Remember, I never knew my real father. So, she was all I had left.
Upon entering their bedroom, I found my mother with her back against the wall sitting in a crouched-like position unable to move. I called out to her and said, “mama, mama,” just like a 8 year old would. Now, during this time, my step-father just stood over me and gave me this evil stare. A stare that I can still remember like it was yesterday. But, as I got closer to my mother, I noticed blood coming from the corner of her mouth. I remember her body appearing to be motionless to me. For a moment, our eyes met and spoke a language of love that only exists between a mother and a daughter. And at that moment, I could feel her pain deeply within my soul. It was a piercing pain that only a child could feel from their mother.
