I began writing Carlos while I was living near Dublin, Ireland in the 1980’s, studying literature and writing. On a trip to Spain I became fascinated by distinctive flavor in Andalusia created by the Islamic, Jewish, and Christian cultures coexisting peacefully for seven centuries.  Yet during that time I was in Ireland Belfast was bombed and Ulster was in a turmoil with sectarian hatred. At an Arts Festival for teachers and students I got the idea for historical fiction depicting the peaceful culture of Spain before 1492 , and the change in knowledge of the world brought about by Columbus.  Through the optimistic, adventurous Mouse, and the pessimistic, fearful Frog I hoped to enliven the adventures of Columbus and his crew and for young readers.
