About the Book

Within six week of their marriage in 1965, Fred Bales and Jan Stebing Bales reported for Peace Corps training at the University of New Mexico. Four months later they landed in Chile as full-fledged Peace Corps Volunteers. During their days in Chile and in training they wrote 75 letters home. These letters make up the heart of this book as they describe two young Americans who were naive at times, wordly at other times, but  immersed in a foreign culture at all times. Their observations chronicle the ongoing adjustments of one couple's efforts to cope with life abroad in a special place at a special time.
