“Eloquent!” Sera thought. How well he brought a different sound the commonly recited Scripture.
“’The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.’ That means that because I am a sheep that God watches over and provides for, I will have everything I need.
“Now close your eyes and imagine this scenery. ‘He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He restores my soul.’“
Jeremiah pushed away from the desk in protest. “Naw, man. I ain’t there. That’s dumb.”
Everyone opened their eyes and waited for Deacon Morgan to speak before reacting. The Deacon had been more than patient with Jeremiah but he really pushed his last play today. The Deacon had to say something to make him stop. Sera decided she would have to say something if the Deacon didn’t.
“Jerry. You have not given us a chance. Hold tight for a minute.”
Jeremiah thrust his hands in his lap and sat, resigned in his chair. He looked down at his hands and then up at Deacon Morgan. His eyes filled with tears.
Seeing this, Deacon Morgan pulled a chair next to Jeremiah and sat down. Careful to respect Jeremiah’s space, Deacon Morgan placed a hand on each of his own knees and leaned forward. He closed his eyes and resumed; this time whispering.
“God wants each and every one of us to have a peaceful rest. He wants us to know that we can rely on Him for everything. Close your eyes and imagine a beautiful park with bright green grass. You are just lying there on the grass and looking up to the sky full of clouds on the light blue canvas that only God can paint.”
Jeremiah shook his head and began to sob. “Man, I just can’t see it. I just can’t.”
“It’s okay. Just listen to the rest of the Scripture. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He restores my soul. He leads me…
Just then, he noticed Jeremiah was also saying the Scripture. “…in the paths of righteousness for his name sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil for though art with me…”

As Sera has grown and changed, the author has also expanded her territory and has been blessed abundantly beyond all of her expectations. The concept of this book combines was drawn from her experience as a Public School Middle School substitute teacher, a chess coach at her son’s elementary school and a Bible Study and Sunday School teacher.
