Reaching Your Hidden Self, the Watcher Within
When I was a little girl my father used to cook breakfast for the whole family. He was a pretty good cook and his favorite breakfast food were these tiny very tasteful potato pancakes. Because my father knew that I really loved his potato pancakes he would cook a few extra for me and give me these to munch on as I walked to school.
If only my poor father knew that I did not eat the pancakes but used them to bribe the local wild cat to walk me to school. I had discovered that if I broke the pancakes into tiny pieces I could put a small piece down on the sidewalk and the “wild” cat would come and eat it. Then I walked a little ways very quietly, stopped, put another pancake piece down and the cat would follow me and eat that piece. After a few weeks of doing this the cat would patiently follow me all the way to school eating my pancake pieces every third of a block or so. If I was very quiet, as you sometimes have to be with animals to tame them or get to know them, the cat would stay with me for a small while and rub up against my legs and purr and seem to be friendly.
It was one of those warm early Spring days when I had plenty of time on the way to school and I was being very still and very quiet so that “my” cat would be with me that I noticed that inner part of myself observing me. It spoke to me saying, “Do not move quickly. Make slow steady moves and the cat will not be frightened away.”
Soon I learned that it was this inner part of myself, the hidden self, the watcher, that was controlling some of my actions in life. One day as I walked to school there was an older man near the entrance gate who seemed to be watching the girls. I looked at him and my hidden inner self said, “Do not look at him. Do not make eye contact. He is not a good man. He is trying to lure a young girl away. He is a sick man. Stay away from him. Do not look so you do not draw him towards you.” This surprised me as consciously I had not really observed this man at all but I suddenly realized that unconsciously I had sensed his evil intent and I studiously listened to my “hidden self” and walked quickly past this man.
