About the Book

The books’ setting is in the early years of the Vietnam War, with Sergeant Clifton A. Murray, who’s in the United States Army. He is a professional soldier and on his second tour of duty in Vietnam. Being well trained with his eleven years of active duty, he is a well seasoned combat veteran. His primary job is being in charge of the door gunners on the Huey Helicopter Gunship and Medevacs; based at Quang Tri, South Vietnam. Due to his arrogances toward his subordinates, and the officers who flies the choppers he is not well liked by any of the men. His willingness to kill without discretion, weather or not the enemy are armed or in surrender he has been taken off flight status and restricted to quarters awaiting charges for killing three enemy POWs. But tonight things well change.

On this night he has found a way to sneak onboard and fly as the door gunner in the right door of a Medevac chopper. Un-knowing to Sergeant Murray, the pilot and co-pilot who are pressing the charges against him are flying the ill-faded chopper. The Medevac mission is actually on a search and rescue mission for twp downed Air Force pilots, some 90 miles into North Vietnam. It doesn’t take the two medevac pilots long after take-off to realize that in the early morning darkness Murray has sneaked on board.

What follows on the remainder of their ill-faded flight, the mission is doomed and the crew members are put into a very precarious situation that will thoroughly test each man physically, mentally and spiritually; and also the unexpected outcome will text the reader in the same ways.

About the Author

Sonny Abbott is 65 years old and this is his second publication with AuthorHouse. His first publication was in the summer of 2004; its name is “GUNNER’S WINGS, The Serge-In-Charge”. This 400 page book was taken from his writings for therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He says he never realized he had a gift for writing and telling stories until he decided to try and put his writings into a book format. Now he hopes to write more books about Vietnam and maybe even a Mystery and a Science Fiction or two. His new book about Vietnam is named, “SERGEANT MURRAY, The War Raged On”. And Sonny Abbott is putting the final touches on the Sequel to “Gunner’s Wings”, its name is, “Gunner’s Wings II, No Yellow Ribbons”. This book is about his returning home from Vietnam and finding that there was no appreciation for the Vietnam War of the Veterans. The demonstrators and the negative publicity from the news media fill him with anger, hate and frustration, plus memories from the war are what brought on his PTSD. He feels that writing about one’s Traumatic experience is good therapy. Sonny says he hopes that the readers will enjoy his books and as long as people are reading them he will keep on writing.
