About the Book

Often times the people in a town are shaped by its landscape, life and lifestyle taking their cues from the things around them. In Zionsville this means openness both of spirit and ideas; a certain glow of being from the quality of light shining down on this close-knit haven in Central Indiana. Sometimes a special person can assist nature in shaping its people. Zionsville is fortunate to have one such person in Tom Melind.

Tom, a graduate of Depauw University and a longtime member of the Lions Club, was instrumental in the development of Lions Park, an 18 acre recreational area for sports lovers and nature lovers alike. It was Tom who converted this plot of land into a community gathering place and it was Tom’s inexhaustible energy that helped raise funds for the project and unite others to work towards this goal.

About the Author

While park revitalization is not Tom’s profession (he is retired from Indiana Bell Telephone Co.) it is his passion. He continues to work diligently to make Lions Park a better place for everyone and has been a leader in assisting other communities in renovating public spaces, including Whitestown. He has now written a book, The Park Doctor, that details how to go about revitalizing parks to create a more beautiful and meaningful community.

Tom has been recognized repeatedly for his contributions to his community. In 1995 he received the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce Town Crier Award. In 2001 he received the highest honor presented by a Lions Club, the WP Woods Award. And in 2003 he was named Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor bestowed by the governor of Indiana for distinguished service to the state.

Possibility is art, seeing possibility and making it real is the role of the artist. Tom Melind is an artist for the people of Zionsville. He changes the landscape in beautiful ways. He inspires others and in doing so has helped shape the town and people of Zionsville.
