The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs’) are vestiges of slavery and thus disgrace and a slur to our nation. The continued existence of these colleges and universities creates a two tier educational system thus precipitating a bi modal society which ultimately hurts the blacks. The society therefore instead of “separate and equal” a slogan constantly heard from the black pulpits, is in reality becoming “separate and unequal”.
At present there are 104 HBCUs’ in the country and more than half of all black graduates come from these institutions. Majority of the students entering HBCUs’are not properly prepared to enter colleges but are admitted by the HBCUs because their federal and state grants are dependent upon the enrollment. The inevitable result is the dilution of the curricula which ultimately results in a two tier education system.
For more than fifty years we (both blacks and whites) have fought to eliminate the existence of segregated schools in the country by introducing the system of busing of the students. Why then we are allowing the existence of these segregated colleges and universities and supporting them by state and federal funds? The demographic changes taking place in this country are profound and we simply cannot ignore the problem of properly educating our blacks and other minorities in this country. To do that the state and federal governments will have to eliminate segregated colleges like HBCUs and ask the young black children to go to ‘regular’ colleges like students from all other races and demonstrate that they are as good as students from other races. It is in the interest of the black youths and the country that these segregated campuses be eliminated so that we have an integrated educational system. This can easily be done by the university administrators, state and federal governments as outlined in the book.
