About the Book

These are stories based on the lives of the Irish during the famine and previously.  Although the times were hard (often for the Ascendancy, as well) there were rewarding episodes, too.  These are what I have written about:  the feel-good elements that can come out of a bleak situation.

Perhaps similar episodes did occur.  IN any case, this is a tribute to a race of survivors, who knew how to grasp opportunity with both hands and who frequently managed to have the last laugh, in spite of the odds against them.

About the Author

Feature writer for many years for the Irish Press and the Irish Farmer’s Journal.  Book on the Connemara pony published by the Mercier Press.  Have written short stories for the radio and for various newspapers and magazines, including Ireland’s Own and Ireland’s Eye.  Currently have a broadcasting slot on a local radio station and write a column for a local newspaper.  Married into an island family off the west coast of Ireland and thus heard many tales of the hardship endured by the native people during the previous centuries, and also of their exploits and derring-do.  This gave me an insight into their thinking and way of speaking, which I have tried to echo in these stories.
