I opened my briefcase and pulled out the insurance policy. I handed it to Michael. He looked it over. With interest, he scanned the page changing beneficiaries. He whistled as he handed it back to me. "I'm beginning to believe Dad was about to redo the whole thing before he died. If he changed benificiaries to turn the policy over to me, I'm convinced he had also wanted Mr. Barnes to change the will." "Now, the only thing is proving it in court." Michael replied. "That should be no problem. Mr. Barnes is due back in a couple of weeks. We'll talk to him and if we're right, we'll use him as a witness." "Honey, I hope you're right." "Come on, let's look through the rest of these papers to see if there's anything else worth having." "I sure wish I knew why he took the safe deposit box without telling Estelle," Michael remarked as he glanced through the papers. Most of them had to do with the company. I decided to have the corporate lawyers go over them to see if they were worth anything. Michael let out a whoop. He handed me a group of papers inside a manila folder. "Look at this!" I opened the folder. There were three letters inside, and a few other papers. The first letter was written about three months ago, before my father started having heart problems. It was to Mr. Barnes, apologizing for letting him go as his lawyer. He also asked for a meeting to discuss a new will. "Damn I wish there was some way we could find out if it happened!" Michael commented, watching me. "I know, but we'll have to wait for Mr. Barnes," I reminded him. The second letter was to Josie. I was curious enough to open it, but I decided against doing so. Whatever he'd written was personal, and I wasn't the type to be nosy, although I was sure Billie would have ripped it open in a second. The third letter puzzled me. It was to Michael and I. "Did you read this?" I asked. "No, I was too interested in the one to Barnes. What's it say?" "Let me read it to you." I sat back on the sofa. "Susan and Michael, by the time you read this, I'll probably be gone. I'm so sorry I've made your lives a mess, I didn't mean to. Take care of Estelle, if you care to. If not, I'll understand. Lord knows she hasn't been the easiest person in the world to live with. Also, take care of each other, although I know you both will anyway. I wish the end wasn't so near.

He decided to relinquish himself of the guilt he felt over what he had done to hurt Susan, for whom he secretly loved. He gives a deposition to Susan’s lawyer, which strengthens their case against Estelle. Armed with enough ammunition to ultimately win their parent’s house back, Susan and Michael are confident they will be triumphant in their battle against their stepmother.
