Drum Beater ran behind Running Horse trying to keep up. Ever since they were small boys, Running Horse could best him in foot races, and try as he might, the results never changed. Suddenly he caught Running Horse, and passed him before realizing what was lying in the snow. Running Horse was sprawled, collapsed on his back, the snow behind was sprayed a wide crimson. A hard slap struck Drum Beater in his ear. Polestruck, the warrior slumped to the ice, the left side of his head imploded, with the impact of La Ramie’s pistol ball. Bits of flesh, bone and brain floated momentarily in the air until they joined with the snow and wind fleeing the canyon rim. La Ramie fired from no more than ten feet and chose a head shot, not wanting a fight with a wounded Indian here on the slick ice. Swinging back to face the wind again, he waited, wondering if still others would appear out of the storm. Looking back at the bodies, he recognized the knotted grouse feathers of the Arapaho tribe. He watched briefly the feathers in Drum Beater’s roached hair as they jerked violently in the wind trying to escape the shattered skull, before returning his attention to await more danger ahead.
Lame Wolf eased through the notch following Running Horse and Drum Beater. He looked toward the lake, but the whiteout conditions made it impossible to see more than several feet away. He paused to listen, but the wind carried any sounds away. Walking a few steps, he listened again before moving cautiously forward still hearing or seeing nothing except snow and the shriek of the wind across the glade. Something was waiting out there, he could feel it. Kneeling in the cold snow, Lame Wolf ceased his advance. Wounded bears needed time to stiffen from their wounds. This time he would be patient.

Section 36 is a story of several journeys throughout history to a unique section of land deep within the heartland of an inimitable strata of mountains created over 230 million years ago. Tied to this land are the lives of some of the first inhabitants of this scenic wonder, a journal of The eternal power of love, vengeance and the search for human fulfillment, mixed with Native American myth and lore, cross many generations as the characters struggle against nature and human vice in their attempt to established a foothold in the rugged beauty of the American West. Are the characters simply destined to play a part in the drama of human existence, or through sheer will of temperament can they learn from past lives and experiences, the ability to mold their own destiny. Travel west with them through the earthquakes and floods of the Mississippi River, the mother who accepts all streams into her womb, as they eke out a foothold along the dark reaches of the Missouri, retracing the route of Lewis and Clark. Only those who learn the lessons of Native American wisdom, and live as one with the land, will survive the ending passageway following the No goal can be reached without sacrifice. How many times in human existence must this lesson be taught before it becomes inculcated within our souls, for those who fail to learn the lesson of history are doomed to repeat it’s sad progress, regardless the sorrow caused. The hard granite peaks respect no one, not even time. Set in the panoramic American West, this saga accurately depicts our country’s history from the late 1700’s through today and is infused with the parables of life necessary for the human spirit to persevere and triumph.
