Two weeks went by and Serena had come to the conclusion it was time to do some serious grocery shopping. Eating junk food all the time just wasn`t good. She got ready and left for the local grocery store. She had been in the store a couple of times to buy a few things so the owner knew her by name. She went in and he greeted her.
“Serena. How is my favorite and prettiest customer today?”
Serena had a mischievous look on her face when she answered, “Hal, you tell that to all of your female customers.”
With a twinkle in his eye, Hal replied, “well maybe, but not about the part of you being the prettiest, that is reserved for you.”
Serena did a curtsy, “thank you kind sir.”
She got a cart and was soon busy putting items in her cart. When she finished the cart was full. She pushed it to the checkout counter. The clerk rang them up. Hal came over and held the door open for her. He started walking to the Suburban with her. Serena told him she could manage it herself.
“Now you listen young lady, just because I`m seventy years old don`t mean I can`t lift a few groceries.”
Serena looked at him with her hands on her hips. Smiling, she said, “well, if you want to be stubborn about it, I`ll just let you do it all.”
Hal`s lips slid into a grin, “well, if you put it that way, I`ll let you help.”
They accomplished the feat in no time. Hal opened the car door for her and she got in. Hal told her to hurry back that her face brightened his day. Serena waved goodbye and left. She stopped at her rural mailbox at the end of her driveway. There was a letter inside. The return address told her it was her birth certificate. She pulled in front of the house. Took the groceries inside then sat down and opened the letter. There was a letter inside with her returned check. What she read was not good news.
Dear Ms. Patterson,
I am sorry to inform you that there is no person under the name of Serena Patterson in our birth records on the date of your birth. Are you sure you have the correct state you were born in? I checked the whole month that you said you were born in, to no avail. I am returning your check. Sorry we could not be of assistance.
She was afraid her parents would stop loving her if they found out.
Serena stopped walking and thought, I wonder if I can still move things? She put her attention on a stone about ten feet in front of her. She concentrated on it and willed it into her hand. She held her hand out, palm up. The stone moved then flew into her hand. It stung her hand it hit so hard. Serena let out a sound. She thought I will have to work on that. Sleepy heard her say ouch and ran over to her. Serena told her everything was all right and reached down to pet her. Her mind started working overtime. Who am I? Where did I come from? Why do I have these powers? Her parents had been ordinary people. It made her think even stronger that she had been adopted. If so, who in the world could be her parents? Did they posess these powers too? She called Sleepy and walked back to the house. When they got back she went to the kitchen sink and washed her hands. She reached for the hand towel. That’s funny
