About the Book

This is the true story of the tragedy that my daughter, Jenna, suffered at the tender age of 14. Life had been good. Within the span of about two weeks, she went from a typical eighth grader, with a bright future in the sport of swimming and the game of life, to a paralyzed, traumatically brain injured, near-death child—the sickest child in the PICU (pediatric intensive care unit). The doctors thought she might have had a stroke...possibly more than one.

Stroke changes everything. You will learn about our “good old days” before the strokes—and the way our lives were forever changed thereafter. This is a story unlike any you’ve heard before. I hope our experiences reach as many people as possible who can relate to portions of this account and learn something from this calamity.

Swimmers, parents, teenagers, doctors, friends, animal lovers, teachers and seekers, behold the Christmas miracle that gave us such hope and brought us closer to the Lord through the power of prayer. It took a terrible misfortune for us to get serious about the most important thing. I don’t recommend waiting…

About the Author

This story was written to inform readers about a tragedy that was inflicted upon my family. It should never have happened. The writing of this book was therapeutic as I confronted a monstrous loss. Watching my only child suffer so intensely for more than seven years has been incomprehensible. There is nothing that could have been worse for me. I would have rather died. Through the purging of my grief, I have found reason to live.

A physical education teacher for over 15 years, as well as a life-long swimmer, I have over 25 years experience teaching and coaching the sport of swimming. I married a swimmer and was the mother of an awesome competitive swimmer. Our lives were all about swimming. And then it happened.

Jenna is my only child. I have been married for over 30 years to my best friend, Ken Sorensen. We reside in Chaska, Minnesota. Until recently we have lived with our two dogs, Cambridge and Madison. On Labor Day, 2005, my special pal, Cambridge, the giant yellow Lab with the big heart, passed away unexpectedly. I truly believe that God felt I was ready to move on; the worst is over. Ironically, I am back on deck coaching swimming again. And the beat goes on …
