WHEN LOVE BEGINS

I remember when.

I remember the need and happiness

and the care we felt.

I remember mostly the love.

When you walked through the door,

time took my heart, passed it around the room,

and settled it in your arms.

I was afraid to move or even breathe,

thinking the moment would be gone forever,

but somehow I managed.

From the corner of my eye

I could see you staring at me.

I pretended not to notice.

Soon our eyes met.

I couldn’t speak; I only smiled.

AFTER THE STORM

Storms had raged all day

sending streaks of lightning

and claps of thunder

out across the blackened sky.

Then the wind changed course

pelting the flowerbed with hail,

and the sending the earth to spatter

the side of the garage.

Fall had come,

and the coolness of the season

finally matched the day on the calendar.

I noticed the scattered bursts of color
