Meditation

I’m the one they’ll show friendliness

but won’t sit down to dinner with –

that sudden bulb over the heads

of the ignorant.

To the catch I’m the hook –

easy to read as open books…

to the illiterate.

I’m that treasure chest locked and hidden in

plain sight.

I’ve shadow-boxed with the sun all night –

flew to the mountainside

and met the moon for lunch at noon.

I was back in time to ride on your

 train of thought ‘til evening.

I used to take it to the last stop

now I’m always just halfway up the block

right when it’s leaving.

I’m told another one will come soon

‘cause everything moves

only within its time –

I’m always just minutes shy of should be

and what could’ve been is always just within

my grasp –

For these few months it’s been

something I’ve touched

but may probably never have…

You look so deep in me your eyes are like

a hidden glass secretly

installed inside the wall facing my bath –

and it hurts so much sometimes, it

almost makes me laugh when I think back

on the past,

since infancy I’ve had a tendency to

try to be what people asked, to

hide behind a mask, so

words were the first toys I had.

And I’ve made others join the game who never

knew that they were playing,

went touring across nations

by nothing more than conversation –

journeyed to outer spaces
