He thought he had got to where he wanted to be in life; his own boss. He wasn’t rich, but he had his own Real Estate Office. He had secured a nice reserve of fund and had a very nice two story brick home in the quiet selective neighborhood where he had always wanted to live, and lots of nice clothes. Yet he was alone, but must be up and about for the day. That whole day had been one disaster after another. Finally he was headed home exhausted after a late dinner meeting with a client. He had closed the deal on the house they wanted, but while the wife was in the restroom the jerk made a pass at Web. That was not heart warming. He soon set him straight that he wasn’t that type and pocketed his check into his briefcase and left him stunned.
He came home that evening and there was this message on his voicemail. It was Phillipa, two weeks after he announced ‘break up’ with her. He played the message.
“Hi, it’s Phillipa. I hope you’re having fun. Bye.”
Her message sounded indignant and carried no positive emotions. That was the more aggravating. He quickly hit the ‘delete’ button and turned around to call Cynthia. Perhaps, that would bring succor at the end of a miserable day.
“Hello dear. It’s Web,” trying to inch his way through with word of endearment.
“Hi Web; what’s up?” she sounded relaxed.
“Nothing much, Cynthia; Just wanted to check up on you; see how you’re doing.”
“Oh, thanks; just got back from my tennis practice.”
“Oh, Ok. How often do you practice? Do you have a match coming up soon?”
“Don’t have a match in view right now, but one has to practice daily to keep one’s skill honed”
“Hmm; sounds tough. I’d love to come and watch your practice one day.”
“Oh sure, you’re welcome to do that. Minky stadium; come on over any day,
“Thanks for the offer. I’ll be there tomorrow.”
“Ok, see ya ‘morrow.”
“You have a good evening.”
“You too; bye.”
It was satisfying knowing that Cynthia was open to conversation with him. He was not in a hurry. Good friends are not made hurriedly.
The next day, Cynthia had a discussion with her mother about Web.
At thirty, she still hadn’t acquired the delicate smile lines that accompany maturity. The subtle change her glasses created seemed to give her the requisite confidence she needed. She was determined to accomplish what she had set out to do; find a husband long before Web got married. That didn’t happen.
Phillipa’s musings were interrupted by a deep, hard voice. She had reached the end of the hallway and was about to turn the corner. The man spoke low, but his intention was unmistakable. There was an edge of steel to his voice as he shouted business details to his listener at the other end of the line and poked mock remarks about ‘the girl looking very old and won out’.
“They must be talking about me,” she mused. To avoid walking into him, she retreated behind a freeform metal sculpture. Her thin white silk blouse was no protection against the cold body of the sculpture as she froze momentarily. She reemerged and proceeded on her way as the man screamed past.

About the Book
It started as a classic teenage dream and drama with all its wingding trappings. Phillipa and Cynthia became arch rivals of some sort; in academia, sports, socials and then some. There were enough youthful exuberance, lasciviousness, tongue lashing, and gossips. Through it all, Cynthia held her head up but not without submitting to the frailty of bubbly youth. On impulse, she physically assaulted Phillipa and quickly bowed resignedly to regrets. But it would appear that her path would always cross with Phillipa’s. She tried hard, but fell sway to the powerful urge to cultivate a relationship in the domain previously pockmarked with Phillipa’s fingerprints. The cursing, the persecution, the psychosis, the tragedy, and the intrigue that culminated in a final rapprochement; all weaved intricately in the “Wacko”.
The plot is compellingly weaved in the most masterful fashion. In its peremptory, there’s a thing or two for everyone. This short piece of work is a must read for the recreation seeker, and a keepsake for pedagogic minds.
About the Author
This author mirrors varied talents. With “Wacko” following rapidly on the heels of his first book, “Once Bitten”, this author again, is proof positive that one can proverbially juggle and view soap opera at the same time. With a background in Computer Engineering and a PhD in Information Systems, Dr. Arinze Steve Nwaeze finds time to feed his passion in the literary domain.
Barely two months after he published his first novel, Dr. Nwaeze again characteristically deployed his talent at the art of story weaving resulting in “Wacko”, a suspenseful tragicomedy.
Writing remains his pastime passion, but as a computer specialist, he finds fulfillment in doodling with computer systems at work. The author also teaches computer systems part of his time. He describes himself as a ‘Long life scholar of learning’, and believes that teaching is an excellent stimulus to personal learning.
