“I didn’t know that skunks could talk,” said Andrew. All the animals in the forest can talk,” explained Sonny. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but why do you have a cactus growing out of your head?”
“Don’t be silly,” said Andrew. “I don’t have a cactus growing out of my head.”
Then Andrew touched his head and felt the cactus. “Oh my-goodness! I do have a cactus growing out of my head,” and he began to cry.
“Don’t cry Andrew,” said Sonny. “I’ll help you.” Sonny told him he knew a man named Doc Rainwater. “I’m sure he can help you. He’s the greatest.” Sonny pointed to a large hill and told Andrew that all they had to do was climb to the other side to Doc’s house. Andrew asked Sonny if Doc was an animal too. “No silly,” said Sonny, laughing. “He’s human just like you.”

About the Book
Andrew and his family visit the saguaro forest. Something strange happens to Andrew; he finds himself in the forest talking to animals and discovers he has a cactus growing out of his head. He makes friends with the animals, who help him navigate the forest to find help for his cactus problem. The whole thing turns into quite an adventure, with surprises at every turn.

Darlene always loved reading books and spending time in the library. Her father made sure she had books to read, a practice she continues for her children. Writing was not in her plans. “This just happened by accident,” Darlene says. “It’s funny how a simple photograph can turn into such a wonderful adventure of the imagination.”
