“I’ve got a strong hold on the rocks down here,” Wyatt explained. “I want you to put your legs over the edge and I’ll guide you down to where I am. Understand?”
“No Wyatt!”, Charlie screamed. “I’ll fall!”
“You won’t fall!”, Wyatt shouted back. “Don’t look down, just do what I tell you to do. Ready?”
“Ready,” Charlie said lying.
Suddenly Wyatt saw Charlie’s little, red hightops appear over the ledge. Wyatt steadied himself, and reached out as far as he could stretch, grabbing Charlie’s ankles and easing him over the ledge.
Charlie landed with a thud on the rocks at Wyatt’s feet. A tremendous pain shot up Wyatt’s broken arm. He nearly fainted.
“Wyatt!” Charlie shouted. “Are you all right?”
“Yeah, Charlie,” Wyatt said through a forced smile. “I told you not to eat so many cookies!”
Charlie blushed deeply, then clinging to one another, the boys made their way slowly back down the rock face to the ground.
McKenzie grabbed Charlie and squeezed him, all the while scolding him for doing something so dangerous and stupid.
“Wyatt, are you all right,” Emma asked with great concern in her voice.
“Yeah, but I think I really messed up my arm this time,” Wyatt said collapsing to the ground.
“My grandmother is a Medicine Woman. Would you allow her to look at you arm?”, Emma asked Wyatt cautiously.
Wyatt looked up into Emma’s concerned eyes and couldn’t say no. “Okay, if it’ll make you happy. Let’s just get out of here and back to Dizzy’s, deal?”
“Deal,” Emma said shooting Wyatt a smile full of relief. “You know, I guess you were right about your not being afraid of anything,” Emma added. “You just risked your life to save Charlie. You’re very brave Wyatt McCabe.”
“Come on, help me up and let’s get out of here,” Wyatt said quickly, blushing deeply through his tan.
“Wyatt,” Charlie said softly, “thanks for rescuing me.”
“No problem, Charlie. I don’t think you should consider rock climbing for a career though,” Wyatt said seriously, then he burst out laughing.
Charlie finally felt safe enough to laugh too.
“What made you climb up there?” Wyatt asked.
“The ghost boy,” Charlie said almost in a whisper. “I saw up on the rocks, motioning me to come up! He had something round and glowing in his hand!”
Wyatt was speechless! All three sets of eyes were staring at him for a response.
“Come on. Let’s go home,” Wyatt said firmly. “I don’t know exactly what’s going on. Until I figure it out though, don’t say anything about this to anyone. Deal?” Wyatt asked seriously, extending his hand for a shake.
“Deal,” all three agreed at the same time, clasping Wyatt’s hand and shaking on it.
