How does a deaf woman let the authorities know she is still in an evacuation area without a telephone?  How could Emily be missed with all the radio announcements, television broadcasts, and a knock on her door?  Now that the mudslides have claimed most of her home Emily is trapped.  Her broken wrist and ankle making it impossible to escape while rats find shelter and overtake the kitchen of the home purchased for Emily’s grandson Charles.  No one knows she has the house and after a search that does not find Emily in Florida her family now believes Emily has gone on one of her excursions.

Emily is a travel writer for Silent Traveler Magazine.  Having such an interesting job she often writes about places to scuba dive.

Emily is known by her family to just up and travel without giving any warning.  Her family now is frantically trying to locate Emily as a double hurricane have just ravaged the Florida Keys in an area Emily owns property.  The clock is ticking as rescue personnel try to recover a fireproof waterproof personal safe that may give clues to where Emily really is.

Meanwhile is at her newly purchased home in Gardenia, Colorado.  Being deaf, Emily does not know of the radio announcement to evacuate her area before a mudslide occurs.  She also does not watch television so her satellite dish has not yet been installed.  Emily is in the house when the mudslide demolishes it.

She must now get herself to safety after being bitten by rats and inhaling dirty water into her lungs.  The clock is wagering against her but drive for survival keeps Emily pressing forward.
