Introduction
The year was 1986. Life was good. We were young, vibrant and on the road to success. Like millions of families, we were living the American Dream. And then, out of nowhere…everything came tumbling down.
A lump? Where did that come from? How could it be undetectable for so long and then all of a sudden there it was? Probably no big deal…she is so young, beautiful and full of life. My mind wanders back to that day when the biopsy came back…breast cancer! First was the shock, then the denial followed by tears. How can this be? The news was like getting run over by a truck.
My mind raced with the news. Cancer. Damned cancer. How bad was it? Do we have insurance coverage? What kind of treatments would be needed? Breast cancer is a killer isn’t it? Think of all the mothers of my friends who died from breast cancer while we were growing up. The thoughts going through my mind were mirrored by my wife, Linda, only her’s went much further…”my God, I’ll lose my breast and be scared forever. My life is surely over. The disfigurement will make me an outcast; no one could ever make love to a woman with only one breast. How much longer will I live? My children, who will take care of them when I am gone.”
Yes, I have been there. I know what families face when a member has been diagnosed with cancer. My first experience was that lazy July day in 1986, when my beautiful wife, Linda, discovered that lump, which was diagnosed two days later as breast cancer. And this was no ordinary breast cancer as we would discover. Not only was the tumor quite large, but the pathology reports came back as a very aggressive type of cancer, which had probably already spread to the lymph nodes. Over the course of the next fifteen years we would have to relive this scene four more times…and it never got easier. No matter what the cancer, the reaction would always be the same. We relate cancer to pain, suffering, degrading and often disfiguring treatment, and ultimately, death. A diagnosis of cancer brings with it, stress, denial, depression, self-loathing, and doubt, which is why I was motivated to write this book.

He has appeared on numerous radio and TV talk-show, and been asked to address leading cancer research centers as well as American Cancer Society. He and his wife are recipients of ACS's Order of the Sword for contributions to the battle against cancer.
