It has been some time since I have flow in a small plane and I still couldn’t believe I was getting this opportunity. We are not off the ground more than ten minutes or so and he tells me to take the controls. It was the first time in many years that I had touched the controls of an airplane but here I am flying a Cessna for over an hour and a half. During this time Harlan gives me the rudiments of flying a plane, it was then and there that I decide to find a way to get my private license. Somehow I think he knew what was going through my mind, I later learned that Harlan is a big proponent of general aviation and he is always willing to pass on the art of flying to any who show an interest in aviation. During the flight he demonstrates the very basics of handling the plane and the flight proves very informative and exciting. Immediately after landing I get out and tie the plane down while Harlan puts the finishing touches on his paperwork. Harlan climbs out and asks if I would like to go to his office and discuss the flight over a cup of coffee. I reply, “That sounds good to me let me give my wife a call before we leave.” Having never been to his office he gives me directions and as we arrive at the edge of town he tells me to pull into the parking lot of the local Hardee’s restaurant. I figure we are going to buy the coffee here and go on to his office. I buy our coffee, a very cheap price for the flying I had just completed. He then directs me to a booth in the corner next to the windows and says, “Welcome to my office.” The next hour is spent discussing flying in general.
