About the Book

Sarah Pemberton, a seventeen-year-old Quaker, and her extended family, have moved into their ancestral home in Bloomington, Indiana. Following an accident, Sarah awakens in the same house in the past and is confused about what has happened. She discovers a secret about the house that she never knew, and meets Ben, a fellow poet with an inspiring soul. Together they follow a hawk on a spiritual journey of self-discovery as they try to help runaway slaves find the freedom they may never get. A surprising parallel between past and present surfaces and leads Sarah to realize that Friends are the same no matter what year it is.

About the Author

Betsy Caulfield is a retired newspaper librarian and book reviewer as well as a writer. Holly Cedar is a writer and special education teacher. She is currently employed as a horseback riding instructor at People and Animal Learning Services, P.A.L.S., and is helping to write and implement the curriculum for a pilot at-risk youth program which integrates writing and horses for the participants.

Coming from a Quaker background, this mother-daughter writing team decided to use their ancestors’ participation in the anti-slavery movement in pre-Civil War Indiana as a starting point. Brainstorming ideas, they created this plot and characters and together wrote the book.

Both women live in Bloomington, Indiana.
