Impressions of a Young Black Man

My Blackness

I am despised for my Blackness,
Yet my blackness is coveted
For its richness and diversity.

I am made a mockery in history lessons…in some universities.
Where my blackness should be known,
it is not shown.

What I have invented,
another man stole.
The atrocity of this reversed role,
has perplexed my Blackness,
has even engulfed my soul.

Yet I strive
for recognition of my Blackness
through
arts, sports, music, science, and business,
through
fashion, medicine, government, and leadership.
My achievements are known
worldwide.

I am not ashamed of my inheritance;
My Blackness
is My Pride!

My Prayer

My prayer was for a wife whose love was unconditional.
My prayer was that I could be deserving
of a love so powerful
that it reflected the love I was willing
to give in return.

My prayer was for a wife
who would fear God so much,
that it would show through her integrity,
morals, and spirituality.
That it would be a light upon her past,
to resist temptations
rather than face God’s wrath.

My prayer was for a wife who would need me
like I need her,
that we could strengthen one another
when weak;
and motivate each other when we speak.
My prayer was for a wife
whose beauty rivaled her sweetness.
Whose kindness matched her meekness
and that my qualities would equal her uniqueness.

My prayer was for a wife
who would share with me a life of intimacy
that would always increase and never decrease,
that would remain replenished and never diminished,
never empty, always fulfilling.

My prayer was for a wife
who would be the mother of my children.
Who would share the responsibility of raising them,
and treat us with respect.
And because of our dedication,
they would have no regrets.

In times of loss,
they would be filled with remorse,
but never would they suffer
or endure parental divorce.

My prayer was for a wife
who is healthy and wise.
Who could show her independence
and speak her mind,
without wearing a disguise.

My prayer was for a wife
who was willing to share our humble abode,
fill it with our laughter, peace, and happiness.
And if God blessed us with riches and all prosperity,
she would think of others, and donate to charity.

My prayer was for a wife
who is not materialistic
but who knows true value through contentment and
great rewards through working hard.

My prayer was answered,
and well received.

I thank God for delivering my prayer to me!
