One afternoon, Jack and I were sitting at the kitchen table; we heard a knock at the door. I got up to answer it.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me. I want to talk to you.”
I couldn’t believe it. How did he find me? I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t call Trip because we didn’t have a phone.
“You can talk to me through the door.”
“Come on, you know I’m not going to hurt you. Are you surprised that I was able to find you? I told you that I would if you ever left me.”
Someone downstairs at the car rentals, gas station or across the street must have heard or seen him because a few minutes later I heard someone coming up the stairs. It was Trip. Then I opened the door and saw Trip escorting Vern down the stairs by the back of his collar on his shirt and the belt on his pants.
“You should know that you aren’t welcome here Vern. You are about to leave now.”
As Vern was going down the stairs, he was yelling so that everyone could hear him.
“I just want to let you know I still love you and I am not going to give up on us.”
Trip stood at the bottom of the stairs to prevent Vern from coming back up. Trip came back upstairs. The boys and I were all huddled together in the kitchen area. When the door opened again, we thought it was Vern coming back. Trip reached out to me to help me up and put his arms around me.
“Are you and the boys all right?”
“We are a little bit shaken up but we’ll be ok I guess. Thank you, for what you just did. I didn’t know what to do or how I was going to get him to leave. All I knew was I wasn’t going to let him come in. How did you know he was here?”
“I didn’t. I noticed someone was at the door from across the street as I was coming back from a service call and I thought you might be taking a nap, I didn’t want him or her to wake you. From the way you described him to me, I realized it had to be Vern. As long as you and the boys are all right, I’m going to go back to work. I’ll be home in a few hours. ”
“Thanks for being there for us. I needed someone and you were there.”
Trip looked at me, smiled and went back to the shop.

About the Book
This book was written as a therapeutic tool, because of being a victim of domestic violence. The events that took place in this book were actual events; the names of the characters were changed to protect what was left of their dignity.
Everyone at one point in his or her lives feels like this is the way life is, well it doesn’t have to be. You have the power to change what happens to you and your children by the choices that you make for yourself and them. The choices you make have an affect on your children in one way or another. Then there are the people that think it’ll never happen to them. This book was written for those people. If it can happen, it will. There are no guarantees in life. If you know the symptoms then you can prevent the years of heartaches. I can only hope that no one ever has to go through life the way I did, no one should ever have to feel as low about himself or herself as a person, everyone is special and has a purpose in life.
About the Author
I only remember bits and pieces from my life, what I do remember are bad memories and the experiences I’ll never forget. I have spent many years trying to protect myself from anyone who tried to get close to me, close enough that I thought they could hurt me. As time went on and I grew up I realized that I had to experience what happened to be the person I am today.
I have always had an interest in writing. I never thought I had it in me to pursue that dream until just recently. I have written letters to the editor of our local paper. I took a course of study in professional instruction in writing articles and short stories for publication. I received a diploma upon completion on November 16, 2000.
I have three very special and unique boys. I married a very special, wonderful and understanding man who also has three very special boys. We have combined our families and today although they are grown and have lives of their own, we still connect in our hearts and it helps us get through difficult times in our lives. We have been together for seventeen years. He is my inspiration and most of all my sanity.
