About the Book

The story opens with a young couple witnessing the climatic end to an 1176 hour marathon dance contest in St. Louis Missouri in 1935.  Jobless, due to the Depression, their only hope to raise enough money to get married and start a life together is to be allowed the opportunity to participate in one of these contests.

The author, a.k.a. Billy Steele, and his sweetheart, Maggie Morgan, experience a multi-dimensional world of entertainment, rivalry and strict competition, as they vie for part of the $5000.00 in prize money in their first contest, The Al J. Roth, All American Derby Show in Long Beach, California.

Do they have a chance as rookies to see their goals realized?  Experience this compelling and entertainment filled story, with its comedy skits, an ice act, disqualification sprints, singing, dancing and suspense.

About the Author

William J. Folz Jr.  is an award winning poet, accomplished artist, lyricist and first time author.  He was born in Evansville, Indiana December 16, 1916 to the Honorable William J. Folz Sr., and Cora Elizabeth Ashley.  Leaving home in his teen’s he found his way into the fascinating world of the dance marathons where he met and married my mother and formed lifetime friendships.

He spent the last ten years of his life writing this story of his marathon experience, but died before its completion.  His dream to share with all generations, the excitement of the 1930’s dance marathons, a forgotten era in American entertainment history, is now a reality through my promise to my father.
