Fast is not the problem.  I’m faster than anyone I know, but I have developed an eye for detail and my work is stupendous!  I was slow and thorough at first.

The way you train your new employee the first night is the way they will clean in the future.  That’s why I only let people clean a rest room on their first night and I first have them watch me.  I am willing to crawl on my knees if I have to, to get things clean.  Your employees will do as you do.  I make a point to crawl on my knees, (whether something needs cleaning or not), to set an example.  The second night I teach them a small commercial kitchen in an office suite. The next night I teach the office cleaning routine (dust, vacuum, trash, etc.).  This book is not about how to clean items.  Cleaning procedures and how to clean things will be available in future reports. Another way to look at the way you first set the example of cleaning, is when you have a water hose on and it flows down your driveway and out of your yard.  It finds the path of least resistance on it’s search for the ocean and creates a path even on your driveway.  If I kept the water on for a thousand years, perhaps a groove in the ground the size of the Grand Canyon would develop.  It would be difficult for the water not to follow this path once the groove develops.  This is the same when you train all of your people in the exact same fashion.  They will follow that path not knowing any other path.  They will do it the same way every time.  The more you teach it the same way over and over, like the river in the Grand Canyon, your people will stay on course.  Your service will be of quality and consistency.  Those grooves keep your employees from straying.  Do not fool yourself and think that you can tell a new janitor to dust and they will know what dusting is and where to find it.

I like to use titles to remind trainees to remember certain things.  For example, a janitor cleaning in front of a customer for the first time, should give a good first impression.  Remember the sales chapter when I gave the reason for a good first impression?  A good first impression is important everywhere.  To do that besides being in a uniform with your ID badge showing, is to have them see you enthusiastically on your knees cleaning under something or along an edge, even if it doesn’t need it.  I try to angle my rear end up in the face of the customer.  I titled this “flash the moon.”  I give them the impression I am thorough, happy, enthusiastic and I’m willing to
