The mere fact that you are reading this book gives rise to certain questions … Are you reading this information out of a sense of curiosity, or are you trying to answer questions that may be troubling you in your personal life? If the latter is the case, I suspect that you are currently in or may be in the beginning stages of a problem.
Nearly anyone can become a victim. This isn’t an exclusive group, limited only to those of lesser intelligence, those of lesser financial standing, those who are timid and shy, and those who by most standards, their own and those with whom they are acquainted, are not powerful individuals.
Victims of stalkers come from all positions in society. I have represented businesswomen who were vice presidents, wives of wealthy individuals, school teachers, average women who were secretaries, and stay-at-home, unemployed moms during and after their divorces. The victims come in all financial groups: those with great resources and those of not-so-great means. There is no common denominator in the victims … however, as we have said before, there are common denominators in the stalkers.
Becoming a victim isn’t something that has a lack of warning signs. When we take a forensic look at the relationship that existed prior to the crisis behavior, there are usually signs that an outsider would have clearly seen. In many cases, the victim herself will admit that she recognized some of the signs and chose to ignore them, but in many cases, those who are close to you have a wide berth when it comes to their behavior and so does the potential stalker.
As I stated in the heading for this chapter, “We only get hurt by those close to us.” This isn’t as profound a statement as it might seem, but when you analyze it, I know that I have found, and I think that you too will find, it to be true. When considering those who we would consider enemies, we are guarded. They aren’t privy to personal information about us, our personal habits, our finances, our work and leisure routines, our friends, and any number of other confidences reserved for those close to us. Not so with our friends … We share it all. It has been said that the benefit of having a close friend or a mate is that you have someone to share things with, good and bad. This is a wonderful process to experience, but when things go bad, and the former mate or friend becomes the enemy, or stalker, he is immediately armed with volumes of information that can be used to disrupt the life of and conceivably harm the victim.
Does this mean that we should never have a close friend, mate, or confidant? Certainly not, but it does mean that if things turn sour, the bad guy has a giant head start.

In today’s world of complex business and personal relationships, there are individuals who find themselves in situations where everything seems to be working against them. In the course of his career, the author has provided the help, strength and capacity to work within a system when the system is not working for the victim.
Examples of problems that plague the victims of personal abuse are threats, extortion, stalking and harassment. The author has worked directly with the authorities, with victim’s attorneys, psychologists and, in some cases has dealt directly with the source of the problem, the stalker.
The author has taken the approach of counseling in writing this book, as though the victim is sitting in his office discussing their problem. He has presented this work in an attempt to benefit those who have yet to understand either the depth or the many possible remedies for the problems that they may be facing.
And finally, the author uses personal experiences in this field to highlight and explain the emotional impact and the seriousness of this terrible affliction in our society. The reader is sure to find themselves in one of the many scenarios presented.
