…For example, one afternoon shortly after getting engaged, I kept walking into the computer room every hour or so. Each time, I was informed that we were now registered for some item (like bedding) or no longer registered for some item since she changed her mind. By the end of the day, we were still registered for nothing. For her, this was fun. To me, it would have been an annoying waste of the day.
Thankfully, we worked out something ahead of this where I have veto power and that’s about it. She can spend weeks or months changing her mind, and when she’s finally set on one, it’s presented to me. If it’s not ridiculously girlie (I’m not going to be entertaining future clients with pink, flowery plates), it’s set in stone and added to the registry. Otherwise, it’s vetoed with comments and she goes back and has more “fun.”
Thus, my days aren’t wasted by shopping endlessly, and she doesn’t get frustrated when I say something like “We’re registering for plates. This is a plate. It’s a perfectly good, functional, not overly ornate plate. Stop thinking a better plate might come along and register for this; we’ve already wasted five minutes on this decision.” In other words, we aren’t going to have to call off the wedding because of the wedding preparation process making us hate each other.
If you can work this deal with your bride-to-be, you’ll be much happier. If not, I wish you luck, and you have my deepest sympathies.
Anyway today was pretty uneventful. I’m wrapping things up here in DC before heading to LA for a wedding shower. Of course, this could be an interesting shower. It’s being thrown by two wonderful women, one of which is my fiancée’s best friend from high school and thereafter (the maid of honor – we’ll call her Lisa), and the other is one of her college friends and bridesmaids (we’ll call her Mary). About the Author
Jim Cutter is not a sensitive man and has little patience for “girlie” behavior. As such, it is something of a miracle that he found a woman willing to marry him. The next miracle was his making it through the wedding process. The wedding world of flowers, china patterns, different kinds of plates and forks, dresses, and huge expenses bewildered Jim. Jim was also disturbed by the apparent total lack of masculine perspective on the process.
For the benefit of future grooms, Jim decided to record his thoughts and reactions to the last month leading up to his wedding. After reading this book, grooms will still be bewildered, but at least they will have some idea of what to expect.
