Bumble Bear came to say good
-bye, however he thought he would just have one taste of trash, a slurp of
water and also investigate the bird feeder that hung in the big oak tree this
one last time. He was supposed to hibernate, as winter was coming on. Someone
kept interrupting his investigation of these pursuits, by taking pictures. He
could hear the clicking sound of a camera and an occasional flash of light. Now
this was something he was rather use too, as when he arrived at this house,
someone always seem to know and brought out their camera. You would think he
was a star or something, however none of his animal fans were about to view
this picture taking.
Bumble was not too popular with
the deer or the other small creatures that lived in this area. Come to think of
it, he realized the only ones who cared about him were the people who lived in
the house he visited. Of course other bears sometimes didn’t mind him being
around. There were also those strange creatures that loved to chase him known
as, “Man’s Best Friend”.
Bumble had a nice lovely thick
fur coat, which made him ready for a very cold winter. Bumble was hoping it
might be a cold winter. However according to what he had read in the
newspapers, which he found in the trash, there was a thing called “El Nino”.
Bumble was not sure what it meant, but it didn’t sound like cold weather to
him. However it was something he could investigate later, but right now he was
too hungry, which in reality he was most of the time.
Bumble felt a deep sadness,
because his friends in the house were moving away. Did you know that bears feel
sadness, well why not? Bumble was very unsure of his future, after all these
friends had supplied him with delicious trash for many a year now. They always
had a water tub with fresh water and they never chased him away. They didn’t
have a man’s best friend and they fed and supplied water for large amounts of
wild turkey’s and many, many deer. Occasionally a mountain lion or a bobcat
would partake of the water also. Once Bumble had noticed the odor of a skunk,
so he assumed it also drank from this tub. A friendly toad lived under the tub
and once in awhile it would take a brief swim in it, but this didn’t hurt the
water any. Bumble knew that his friends had even been brought a tiny baby fox,
right to their door, presented to them by its mother. Bumble’s friends gave the
baby fox honey and milk, so there after it would come with its mother and
father every evening and sometimes during the day for it’s
daily treat.
Bumble would sometime watch while
hidden in the bushes as the man of the house, would toss chocolate covered
graham cracker’s out to the fox family, which
consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Fox and the baby who all seem to love, chocolate
graham crackers! The lady of the house would whistle and the foxes would all
come running to the front of the house, day or night. Bumble thought the fox
family must live near by or they had excellent hearing!
The turkeys that came for a visit
became so friendly, that they began sitting on the porch railing and looking in
the windows. All the animals seem to know when feeding time was, and these
people fed good stuff every evening! The deer living here were really well fed.
Sometimes there would be 20 or more of them partaking of the alfalfa that was
supplied for them. Now an unknown fact but true is that deer are afraid of
turkeys. The turkeys will chase the deer, jumping high in the air at them and
the deer will run away
During the early summer the does
would bring their new babies up to introduce them to Bumble’s friends and the
alfalfa pile. Sometimes the does have twins, who prance about in their
excitement. It is interesting that the bucks (the dads) and the does (the moms)
do hang around together.
Finally the moving day came. From
a distance, Bumble watched a huge truck take his friends and all their
belongings away. With tears in his eyes, it was at that moment Bumble decided
he would take a trip and see if he could find where his friends had moved too.
Bumble knew he was suppose to hibernate, but he also knew California had a much
warmer winter than other places, plus he had a great fur coat this year to keep
him warm.
Now you would think that bears
have a good sense of direction and they do. Bumble, however had found a used
map in the trash and so after studying it he decided to take the Sierra
Nevada route. Bumble also thought he would make a quick stop in Lake
Tahoe. He had heard that the people there had some pretty classy
trash, but he knew he couldn’t stay long because it was a gamble to be there during
hunting season. Bumble wasn’t too happy with the “El Nino “weather, because
most of his travels he was constantly wet. After his uneventful stay at Lake
Tahoe he continued his journey down the Sierra’s.
