About the Book

This is a story about a young boy, growing up with all kinds of animals. This included elephants, tigers, zebras, and horses to name a few. It was the early 30’s in Europe and the country was just coming out of its depression. The young boy’s father was working at the largest zoo in Germany. The name of the zoo was Hagenbeck zoo. The first years were as an animal handler then the zoos top elephant trainer. Soon after he traveled with the circus that the zoo had ownership of. In the mid 30’s, my parents were married and the zoo provided housing not far from the zoo. Later the young boy, 1938 to be exact, was born into these animal rich surroundings. Growing up with all types of animals and witnessing the horrors of war all over Europe. Traveling to numerous countries and living among its people.

About the Author

Hugh Schmitt was born in Hamburg, Germany on February 26, 1938, growing up under the dictatorship of Adolph Hitler and a war torn country. Running to bomb shelters, losing a house and possessions to bombs, and traveling Europe and abroad with his parents in the circus, he lived a whole lifetime of adventures in just his first twelve years. His father, Hugo Schmitt, was a world famous elephant trainer. This first book ends with an unbelievable journey to the now defunct Ellis Island in New York City harbor in full view of Lady Liberty.
