Together Forever, Again

He gave her a quick kiss, then let her go to lean back against the trunk of the tree.  He knew the kiss had meant a lot to him.  Was she being truthful when she said it didn’t mean anything to her?  His stomach turned at the thought.  "Speak for yourself, Kelli.  Don't go putting words into my mouth for me.  If that didn't mean anything to you, I'll have to work a little harder at it next time."

"There won't be a next time." She stated firmly.

"What do you mean there won't be a next time?"

"You promised you would be on your best behavior...."

"And you knew the whole purpose of you coming was so my family wouldn't suspect there are any problems.  If we don't kiss the whole time we're there, they're darn well going to suspect something is up."  Trent said, panic edging his voice.

"Well, you better think of a good explanation for them.  Because you’re not touching me again."

"Kelly, I haven't kissed you in ten months.  Ten months!”  Trent felt like he was on a roller coaster.  One second he thought he was making progress, and the next, the floor dropped out from under him.  He was beginning to get a little sick of it, and he was struggling to maintain the patient control that he was reputed to have.  He didn’t even think about the next words that came out of his mouth, or how they would sound to Kelli. “That was one of my favorite things about being married to you.  If you think I'm going to waste all my chances of ever kissing you again, you can think again.  This might well be my last chance, and I intend to take advantage of it."

"That's it.”  Kelli wiped her mouth and stood up, shock and disappointment showing in her eyes.  “You didn't bring me along to convince your family that we're happy.  You brought me along for one last romp before you divorce me."

"Who said anything about divorce?" he asked, getting to his feet to tower above her.  Kelli could be extremely hard headed when she felt she was being mistreated.  She could rant and rave for hours before anyone would be able to talk sense to her.

"I'm right, aren't I?  That's disgusting." She glared up at him.

He returned her glare as he defended himself.  "First, I did not bring you here for one last romp, as you put it.  I brought you with me for my family.  Two, my family will expect, and rightfully so, to see us kiss and behave like we're happy.  Three, we were many things when we were together, but we were never disgusting!"

"Take me home."

"No!” he told her, quickly losing what was left of his patience.  “You're giving me this one last week.  Then you can do whatever you want.  But this week is mine!"
